A Letter from the Founder

My official journey as a hair professional started in 2011, less than a year after I had to return to Korea from living abroad. I arrived with nothing to my name and already pretty defeated by odds that felt far too big for my younger self to handle alone.

Financial desperation and genuine naivete led me to my first dead-end job — one that almost convinced me this was all I'd ever be good enough for.

But I knew I had something in me. And I still had something to prove.

I've always loved art, and I graduated in the top 1% of my class in high school. I knew that if I tried my hand at a creative industry, I'd be able to learn fast. But a lot of things were off the table. I needed something that would put real cash in my hands and food on the table.

That's why I chose hair.

I fell in love with hairdressing almost instantly after I started working as an intern. It allowed me to express my creativity while making others happy, and every second I spent learning meant I was investing directly into my future.

I didn't just see a glimpse of hope. I saw a big, bright ray of it. Hope for a future where all of my hard work was being reinvested into something real.

What I didn't realize yet was that my life would become about more than just my own. It would become a life meant to share that hope with others.

As I navigated the hairdressing world, I had two constant struggles.

The first wasn't about effort. I was never afraid of working hard. What worried me was wasting time on places, methods, and priorities that weren't right for me, sabotaging my opportunities and slowing my growth.

The second was money. I wished I could afford more education without breaking the bank.

In other words, I valued my time and my money. And I still do.

After over a decade as a hair professional, having worked in salons ranging from budget to high-end, including my own, and taught at beauty colleges, I now carry a new kind of hope.

It's the hope of providing hair education focused on the essentials. Education that equips the eager and the driven with a practical foundation so they can become independent learners who know how to navigate hair design on their own, instead of wasting their most precious resources — time, money, and a hopeful heart.

When a hair designer knows how to build and sharpen their own foundational skills, they can move on to higher goals. Improving their creativity. Better serving their clients. Advancing the craft as a whole.

And maybe, just maybe, they'll become someone who wants to share that same hope with others.

I want you to be able to learn as much as possible without stretching beyond your means, whether that's your budget, your time, or the responsibilities you're already carrying.

Premium education can be incredible and very much worth the investment, but it isn't always accessible or aligned with where you are right now. I know what it's like to want that kind of training and not be able to reach it. I also know how transformative it can be when you do. Hairtuoso is my way of making sure more people get the chance to start somewhere solid.

It's true. I'm both an educator and a businessperson.

Things of real value can't always be offered for free — but they can be offered with good intentions, and offered well.

Why Community Matters — and Why You Matter

No one in hairdressing has all the answers. To claim otherwise would mean having worked on every head that exists — studied every texture, every history, every reaction to every technique. No one has that kind of time. Which means this craft is, and always will be, a work in progress.

The smartest students know they don't know everything. Neither do the best teachers, or honestly, the best kind of people in general.

It's not about arguing over whose approach is "right" — it's about recognizing that variety is what makes any field rich. What's worth aiming for instead is passionate contribution and constructive criticism — the kind meant to encourage and discover, not discourage and destroy. It sounds less like "you're wrong," and more like "here's what I've learned that works."

This is why I don't discount what other beauty professionals have learned along the way. They've met people I'll never meet, touched hair I'll never touch, and discovered their own creative ways of delivering results, and those experiences carry real weight.

It isn't about redrawing the line on who has "truly mastered" the craft. As the saying goes, beauty is in the eye of the beholder — hair artistry is largely subjective, and it should be. It's about recognizing that no single perspective is the whole picture.

Here's something I often tell my university students. There's only one of you in the entire universe. (Well, except maybe in the multiverse — and even then, that version of you probably isn't doing what you're doing right now. Maybe they're napping even harder in class.) And that's exactly what makes each of you invaluable. Whether you choose to recognize that value and then show up as your best self in pursuit of your purpose — and make a real difference — is up to you.

So I want every student who comes through Hairtuoso to know this. No one else can bring your particular perspective to this craft. No one else has your hands, your eyes, your history, or even your particular warmth that can brighten someone's day. My hope isn't to hand you every answer — it's to be part of your journey toward finding your own.

That's the mission of Hairtuoso. It's to inspire and encourage virtuosos in hair and beyond, each contributing to the community of beauty in their own way.
